A bomb squad expert prepared to diffuse a grenade hurled at a patrol of paramilitary and Indian police officers  but failed to go off, in Srinagar, in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

The grenade was safely detonated by the bomb squad in Srinagar. Security has been stepped up in Kashmir and other parts of India ahead of Republic Day ceremonies on Jan. 26 marking the day in 1950 when the country adopted its constitution.
